Four Important Car Stunts to Master for the Movies

4 Important Stunts

What would an action movie be without car stunts? It’s the car stunts that keep us on the edge of our seats. If you’ve ever thought about learning some of the car stunts you’ve seen over the years, then here’s four of the most important stunts that you’ll need to master to become a great stunt driver.

Driving on two wheels (‘skiing’)

Always a delight to watch, ‘skiing‘ stunt is where a driver goes up on two wheels of the passenger side of the car and proceeds to continue driving on two wheels. It is a difficult balancing act that requires a lot of precision driving. There is usually a ramp involved that puts the car up on its side. The driver must then maintain the balance through steering alone.

One of the most famous ‘skiing’ stunts is in the movie Transporter 3 when Jason Statham’s character drives between two trucks.  It is a spectacular stunt.

Handbrake Turn

As stated by Wikipedia” The handbrake turn (also known as the bootlegger’s turn) is a driving technique used to deliberately slide a car sideways, either for the purpose of quickly negotiating a very tight bend, or for turning around well within the vehicle’s own turning circle.” In other words, the turn spins the car in a very tight circle allowing the driver to go in the opposite direction without using very much space. It is sometimes used for tight parallel parking as well, where a driver can demonstrate precision driving in minimal spaces.

Here’s an example of a handbrake turn in action with an attempt to set a new Guiness World record for the tightest parallel park.

Rockford turn (Reverse 180)

James Garner played Jim Rockford in the Seventies TV show “The Rockford Files.” His signature move was the reverse 180 stunt. Rockford would leave the scene in his Camaro by reversing at full speed. Then using the handbrake and twisting the wheel, the car would spin 180 degrees and Rockford would then hit the gas and speed off into the distance. Although the Reverse 180 stunt has been used in many movies since, it is often called the “Rockford Turn” because James Garner made it famous. Here’s the complete compilation of all the turns made in the TV series.

Oversteer/drifting

The ability to drift is a critical skill for all stunt drivers. Countless movies and TV shows have scenes where the driver drifts left or right through an intersection. It is usually a chase scene, with a police car also drifting through the same intersection (and often failing to complete the drift allowing the first car to escape).

One of the movies that took the stunt to the extreme level was The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. Here’s a scene from the movie showing many of the different ways to drift through the city.

Why Stunt Driving is the Experience Gift

Experience Gift

With stunt driving days increasing in attendance every year, the Stunt Driving Experience has become a common present. Why do people give a lifestyle experience gift like stunt driving? Perhaps it is because it is so unique.  It is something different.  We’ve all sat glued to the screen at the movies and watched unbelievable car stunts that had us wondering “How do they do it?”  There’s a mystery and glamour to the stunt industry. That mystery and glamour is passed on when it’s given as a gift. We’ve also see a big rise in presents that are experienced based rather than giving another physical object that often lies in the cupboard and then thrown out.  People are looking for experience gifts that create memories and that can be easily shared on social media. An experience shared, doubles the fun.

Here’s the different ways that people are gifting stunt driving lessons.

Christmas Experience Gift

Here’s the answer to the eternal question “What do I buy them for Christmas?” Undoubtedly the Stunt Driving Experience is our most popular Xmas experience gift. After pulling out the standard items from their stocking, recipients of a Stunt Driving day get a unique gift that makes their Christmas day really special. And the giver usually gets envious glances from everyone else who is thinking “That’s a really cool gift!” With the season beginning in March, the recipient also has plenty of time to plan the day of their experience. It is without question our #1 holiday season experience gift.

Bachelor Party and Bachelorette Party Gifts

Stunt Driving Bachelor Parties are growing more popular. One of the reasons is that a group of friends can get together in an alcohol free environment and participate in something memorable and meaningful. The stag party builds camaraderie while still giving each individual their own experience as well as the group experience.Stunt Drive Experience Gift

Bachelorette parties are also quite common. On average, women are better stunt drivers than men (Maybe they don’t have as much to prove?) and women are always at each event, showing the men how it is done! The stunt lesson of four hours is also a good time length as it gives everyone a nice balance between time in the car and hanging out with friends.

Related to the stag event or hen party is the “best man gift” or “maid of honour/bridesmaid experience gift. When you want to say “thanks for standing beside me” an adventure experience gift says it all. Couples can celebrate the biggest adventure of all with another one!

16th birthday, 18th birthday, 21st birthday, 40th birthday and 50th birthday gifts

Parents looking for ideas for a 16th birthday often give their teenagers an experience gift. The Sixteenth birthday is common because they are getting their driver’s license around the same time. Stunt driving gives them an extra level of car control skills and helps build confidence. Stunt driving also gives new drivers’ an idea of where the limits of car handling lie and can be valuable knowledge for their future on the road.

Eighteenth birthday and twenty first birthday celebrations come next. These birthday celebrations provide a great memorable activity where parents and friends of all ages can participate with the birthday person. Many like the fact that an alcohol free event during the day can actually be more fun.

Groups have funEach month we also put on fortieth birthday and fiftieth birthday celebrations. It’s a chance for many to put aside all the worries and frustrations of driving and do some things they’ve never done before behind the wheel of a car.  The daredevil component of stunt driving is sometimes unleashed at these times!  Perhaps regaining a sense of adventure after a mid life crisis or just being care-free for a day, the extreme experience gift is a refreshing day well spent for many.

Wedding Anniversary Experience Gifts

Partners often buy their significant other a stunt drive gift as an anniversary present. Sometimes it is just for the other person and sometimes they both go on the event to share in the fun. Although the marriage anniversary is popular, there’s also the ‘going out for 3 months’ or ‘going out for 1 year’ experience gift for couples. Other anniversaries include job anniversary of employment anniversary or even an addiction free anniversary. Warning: you may develop an adrenaline addiction when stunt driving hahaha.

Father’s Day and Mother’s Day Gift

Many parents are looking for opportunities to spend quality time with their ‘grown up’ kids. And every year they get stuck asking “What is the experience gift for him or the experience gift for her?”  Everyone is also looking for experience gift ideas for Dad or Mom at this time.  Stunt driving gives them an experience that they will be talking about for years to come. It will be the story that comes out every thanksgiving and Christmas. It’s a terrific family event that creates many long term memories. In a related area is the Father Son and Mother Daughter gifts which are also very popular for similar reasons.

Thanksgiving Gift

Thanksgiving Experience GiftWhat better way to say ‘Thank you’ during the thanksgiving season, than to give someone a truly unique and exciting gift? It’s for this reason, we see many people coming out during our October events. Someone has said ‘thank you’ by giving them an amazing gift.  Thanksgiving is also the time of year when people realize the summer has past and there’s not much time left that they can spend outdoors.  Many people are looking for that one last extreme sports event they can squeeze in before the cold weather hits.  Thanksgiving becomes the perfect time of year to let loose and feel good about being bad with a motor vehicle.

When You Need to Make an Apology Gift

When You Need to Make an ApologyHave you ever been stuck in a situation where you’re screwed up and need to REALLY apologize? Sometimes you really have to pull one out of the bag to get back in the good graces. A stunt driving experience just might do the trick! When you’re looking for experience gift ideas for him that says “I’m sorry” in a new and interesting way, then think about buying them stunt car lessons.  Everybody gets to let off some steam and with a few laughs and jokes, magically, things can get back on track 🙂

Friends Coming to Town Gift

What to do when friends are coming to town?  Hosts are looking for something new and unique they can do with their “out of town” friends. An experience gift creates a special time that they won’t forget for a long time.  A stunt driving day will have them telling stories about their trip to Toronto for years to come.

Just Because Experience Gift

And finally, there’s always the “just because” gift. Give them a stunt drive experience they will never forget, just because you think they will like it. Nothing says “I love you” like giving someone a gift for no reason at all. Just because. xo.

Why Stunt Classes Make Great Team Building Activities

Team building activities

How teamwork makes the dream work

BMW CarsIf you are looking for team building ideas where team building skills can be improved, then one of the best team building activities for work is a stunt driving experience. The day is chock-full of fun team building activities where drivers quickly find themselves needing new skills. Communication, trust, collaboration, and problem solving are all required as well as many other team building skills.  Here’s an outline of how the stunt drive challenge promotes teamwork to ultimately strength the company culture and literally ‘make the dream work.’

Stunt challenges

The Stunt Challenge requires each team member to support and encourage their teammates in new skills that no one has tried before. Stunt driving needs a different approach to driving that puts everyone on the same level. Nearly all participants have never tried stunt driving before, so it means they are working together without the hierarchy of some with experience and some without. With a level playing field, the dynamics of the group changes and encouragement and support become key elements of the team outing.

Team building activities and communication

With each stunt, the instructor gives each participant a clear explanation of what is required to complete the maneuver. With stunts such as the reverse 180, the driver must forget their standard street driving skills and adopt a completely new approach to driving. Clear communication between instructor and driver is very important. The car itself also communicates through handling and performance. The driver finds a new set of communication skills and learns the importance of carefully following instructions and then giving the appropriate feedback to improve the stunt.

Team building and trust

TrustIn stunt driving, the car is aggressively thrown around the pavement and put to the edges of its handling capability. The driver must learn to trust the instructions and feedback of the instructor. The instructor and those riding along in the back seat must trust the driver to do their best. They must also trust their own instincts, experience and abilities. Stunt driving is an excellent team building activity to promote trust and team bonding. Participants get to know each other better outside of the workplace and find new ways to work together better.

Group dynamics

In a typical stunt driving day, all participants find themselves in new territory. Most if not all, have never been stunt driving. Everything is new and the rules of the workplace are put on hold. A new situation is formed where team members discover who is the better stunt driver and who needs more practice. Team building interaction undergoes a transformation. For example, to the surprise of many, women are often better stunt drivers than men. The group dynamic changes and the challenge for some is to accept that they may have a new leader and they must adapt to different relationships within the group. Collaboration becomes key. Stunt driving teaches the group to be flexible, to accept new roles and the abilities of others regardless of their position in the workplace.

Team building and motivation

Motivation and determination are perhaps the strongest aspect of a team building activity. Participants have seen countless movies with car stunts and there is a new found curiosity to see if they can also perform those stunts. With their co workers watching them, they are determined to do their best and show everyone they can do it. The motivation to learn all the stunts and then combine them in and ‘end of day’ competition is extremely high. To reawaken motivation and determination in employees, stunt driving is definitely one of the best team building activities you can do. It’s a great way to promote moxie and drive the positive energy forward.

Problem solving activities

LessonsThe perfect car stunt takes practice and persistence. Problem solving is key to improving each maneuver. Perhaps more throttle is required and less braking. Maybe the driver needs to be more precise in their turns. Or they need to better understand the car’s handling dynamics and its overall weight. Drivers work with their instructor and other team members to resolve the problem and each time, perform a better stunt. Team building training promotes the development of an important skill: Problem solving.

Exercises in fun

Most importantly, stunt driving days are a lot of fun. Each team outing is typically full of laughs and camaraderie as participants put themselves in an exciting and adventurous environment with team building games such as the final competition. Team bonding is a key part of the event and often differences are resolved and previous friction between workers dissolves in the fun of the event. Conflict disappears. Workplace culture and corporate culture are stronger and workers feel they are part of corporate culture that values their contribution and rewards them with a great experience. Stunt driving as a team outing improves the team spirit and promotes a stronger engagement with the company.

Team building training is important in business and we have specially tailored programs to promote these abilities for your group. Our team building strategies have been successful and competitively priced. So if you are a corporate event planner looking for a corporate team building outing then please contact us and find out how our team building day can help your business.

What You Should Know About Moxie

What You Should Know About Moxie

Max Out Your Moxie

Moxie is not easy to define. The name first originated in the late 18th Century as a soft drink but today the recipe is a little different. If we were to try and max out your moxie in the lab, this is how we might put it all together:

A hit of grit

Determination makes up a big part of moxie. It is that inner resolve where you say to yourself “I’m going to give this all I have to make it happen.” You knuckle down, tighten your belt and go forward, even though your knees may be knocking together. We call it true grit.

A pinch of pep

We all need energy to get through the day. There’s also different kinds of energy for different situations. Sometimes we need the slow long burn energy of the marathon and sometimes we need a quick pick-me-up to handle a surprise. Moxie is more about the pep that gives you sudden acceleration and livens up the moment.

A shot of savvy

DeterminationDetermination and energy is not enough. A winning combination is one with some cunning street smarts. You need to know when to apply the right knowledge and experience to the task. Playing that trick up your sleeve with cleverness will have them shouting “They have moxie!”

A nip of nerve

It’s in moments of danger that we need nerve. We look down the track and know that an error may result in pain or humiliation. Nerve gives us the boldness to go ahead even though we know we might not succeed. We throw caution to the wind and like Nike’s famous slogan, We just do it. Nerve is moxie. Moxie is nerve.

A dollop of dash

But moxie is more than all of these elements. We say “moxie” when a person does a difficult task with style. The flair and ingenuity they bring with them has heads nodding in admiration. Dash is the magic ingredient that turns mettle into moxie. It’s the ability to carry out a task with grace, grit and above all, a big grin.

How you find it

DashMany people find their moxie when playing extreme sports, but you can find it in any tough situation. Whether it is in the office, at home or at school, moxie is needed everywhere. It’s a state of mind. Many people take our stunt driving lessons to put themselves in a place where they know they will need some moxie. Learning a new stunt puts you in the ‘moxie state of mind.’ It’s a way to practice putting the recipe together, so that later on when you need moxie, you know how to summon it up. Performing stunts allows you to practice your driving skills while learning how to find your moxie at the same time.

Why you need it

Moxie helps you win, particularly in team building activities. While others may have the same skills as you, moxie can make the difference. It’s the mental edge that gets you through with style and speed. Moxie finds a way to make it work and is a valuable character trait. And that’s why one of our themes for 2019 is

Max out your moxie!

Lessons Learned When Stunt Driving

We have had over 3500 people through our stunt drive classes. Many have written to us, thanking us for the stunt driving course and how it helped them deal with their own lives. Here are the top five lessons learned from our stunt drive programs.

1. Remain calm when things seem out of control

When stunt driving, you’ll often find yourself in a car that is out of control. This moment can be scary and full of panic. However, it can be good to put yourself in this situation as you realize the importance of remaining calm. Controlling your panic allows you to see the situation clearly and know what to do next. It allows you to try again and keep moving down the road to success. With time, you understand that the situation was not as bad as you had thought and even in the worst situations, controlling your panic is a valuable skill for everyday living.

Maintain calm2. Learn to be precise

Precision is a key element to a great car stunt. Drivers must learn to hit their mark consistently and accurately. Great stunters are constantly practicing their craft to ensure they are always exactly where they should be. It’s not enough to be close. Precision also reduces the risk of something going wrong. In the movie world, it can mean the difference between an action scene that makes the movie a hit or the point where people go and get popcorn.

3. Be aware of your daily habits.

People going through our stunt program soon discover their bad driving habits and how that can prevent them from being a good driver. Some people steer the car as if washing the windshield. They soon realize how this bad habit impacts their driving. Other bad habits such as not watching the road carefully soon surface when in a stunt driving program. Stunt driving reminds us that we often drift into lazy ways of driving when we need to be vigilant and competent when controlling a motor vehicle.

4. Focus on the path and not on the obstacles.

When stunt driving, you have a clearly defined path that you must follow. If you keep looking at the obstacles, that is where you will instinctively steer and you will end up hitting your obstacle. If you keep your focus on the path, then you will automatically steer the car along the path. Follow the path and don’t look at the obstacles. You will have success.

5. Adrenaline needs to be managed

Adrenaline is an important part of our physiology and helps us deal with difficult situations that involve split second decisions and timing and danger. However, letting adrenaline take over and making rash decisions is not helpful. In extreme situations, as in life, if you can manage your adrenaline correctly, you can use it to your advantage. The key is understanding when you have a surge of adrenaline, and then riding that wave with you in control. The adrenaline will help with precision, accurate driving and those split second decisions.

Although we are not a stunt driving school, our stunt driving courses are great for the ‘school of life.’ That’s why we also emphasize that, above all, make sure you have fun!
