Wings & Slicks

On August 26th, Wings and Slicks hosted Round Two of the 2011 Pursuit Series in Barrie Ontario at our Molson Center Complex track. The weather was a perfect 27 degrees and sunny.  The 12 driver line up began the day with a warm up session, followed by the qualifying round to determine positions for the double elimination with wildcard tournament. Each driver was guaranteed five rounds before elimination. Then we were down to the final two drivers who competed in the Championship Pursuit Race.

In the final Pursuit Race, Michael Hosking came out on top with the win! He celebrated with a bottle of champagne and won a $100 gift certificate for his next visit back plus an invitation to the upcoming all champion Pursuit event!

There was so much driving time for every driver we had two drivers retire early due to physical exhaustion. A great memory for all participants who now have a new appreciation for the sport of Motor Racing.

Wings and Slicks recently donated an event for the Dale Hawerchuk Charity Classic where  $3800 was raised for the Headwaters Health Care Centre in Orangeville.

As a result, six lucky participants will get to take part in our Pursuit Race. The day will begin with some practice and qualifying sessions.  Once the drivers and sorted out their level of talent, the head-to-head pursuit run-offs will begin.  This tournament style program has been enormously successful and it promises to be another “thrill of a lifetime” occasion.

Larry Dunn of Landex Capital Corporation recently brought six people for the half-day Wings and Slicks experience.  The first session was just about to get underway and the cars had been pulled from the trailer when a brief shower of rain arrived.

The shower ended quickly but left a distinct shadow on the pavement where each race car had been.  Everyone had fun joking about the shadow including one participant who demonstrated how to drive the “invisible car”.  Within a few minutes the pavement was dry and the drivers settled down for some serious fun. Participants in these sessions really enjoyed themselves  – the photo speaks for itself.

The fun then continued throughout the afternoon with another session of fifteen people, so Saturday, August 13 was a very busy day.

After the great success of the last “Stunt Driving Experience”, Wings and Slicks have announced the next stunts driving day.  Have you ever wondered what it would be like to drive a car like the stuntmen in the movies? Well this stunt driving Experience will be right up your street! You will learn how the pros do it with this fun day that you will never forget. Included in your day are the following exciting maneuvres:

•Handbrake Turns
•Handbrake Parking
•Parallel Spin Parking
•180 Spins
•J Turn Demonstration
•High Speed Reversing

Your instructor will demonstrate each skill before it’s your turn to take the wheel. You are then split into groups and introduced to your track instructor (maximum group size 4 people). You will be taught how to execute a handbrake turn which you will then apply to put the car into a tight supermarket type parking space using the handbrake! Next you will try 180 degree spin parking. You may have seen seen this stunt on a few TV advertisements!

Not only is this Experience a lot of fun, it also teaches you how to handle a car in ways which may come in very useful when driving on public roads.

The stunts day will be held on Sunday 11th September  – 9:00am
at our track in  Barrie.

Due to the success of our previous events, all sessions on August 13 are now sold out.  These sessions include the Morning Introductory Program and the Afternoon Introductory program where participants experience the thrill of driving a Formula Race Car for the very first time.  Our new Corporate Program with Landex Capital Corporation is also sold out.

However, there are still opportunities left for that number one item in your bucket list – “Drive an Open Wheel Race Car.”  We still have openings on August 27 and September 10 which will give you the chance to cross that one off your list!

We held our very first Stunt School program this past weekend at the Molson Centre in Barrie and the overwhelming response was “We love it.”  Ten participants took part in a program where they learned several new stunt skills such as handbrake turns, 180 degree slides and controlled mayhem!

Driving instructor Rick Higgins directed the program where each person received some introductory training and got a feel for the car.  Then the real fun started as they learned to throw the car around and experience the thrills they’d only ever seen in the movies.

“It’s one thing to watch a stunt car and an entirely different thing to actually do the stunt yourself, ” commented Hans Wolter one of the other instructors for the day.
